Alongside the SAE viscosity grade, engine oil labels carry a performance rating — a letter-and-number code that certifies the oil meets a specific standard of engine protection, emissions compatibility, and service life. There are three major systems in use worldwide, and which one matters depends on where your engines come from.
API (American Petroleum Institute)
The most widely used system globally, especially across India, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Petrol engine oils are rated with an "S" prefix (SN, SP — newer letters indicate newer, more demanding standards); diesel engine oils use a "C" prefix (CI-4, CK-4). A rating like API CI-4 tells you the oil meets a specific, independently-verified standard for that generation of diesel engines — important for heavy-duty trucks and diesel-dominant fleets.
ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association)
The European standard, more common on European-brand vehicles and increasingly relevant for GCC markets with a large population of European cars. ACEA categories (A/B for petrol/light diesel, C for catalyst-compatible "low-SAPS" oils, E for heavy-duty diesel) are generally more stringent on specific European engine designs than the equivalent API rating.
JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization)
Specific to Japanese engines, most notably motorcycles. JASO MA/MB ratings matter because motorcycle engines often share oil between the engine and a wet clutch — a standard car engine oil's friction modifiers can cause a motorcycle clutch to slip. This is directly relevant across South and Southeast Asia, where two-wheelers dominate the vehicle population.
Which one do you actually need?
It depends entirely on the vehicle fleet in your market — not on which system is "better." A distributor supplying a largely API-rated market (most of Africa, South Asia) doesn't need ACEA-rated stock, and vice versa. If you're not sure which rating your market's vehicle parc actually expects, tell us the vehicle types and we'll match the right product — this is exactly what the recommended products on each of our country pages are built around.
