ISO VG grade

ISO VG 68

ISO VG 68 covers 61.2 to 74.8 cSt at 40 °C, so 68.0 cSt falls inside it.

Approximate result for everyday selection. It is not a lab value.

How accurate is this?

The results are close approximations for everyday oil selection. Real viscosity depends on the oil and the test, so this is not a lab value and should not be used for specifications, tenders or disputes. For the exact figure, use the data sheet of the product you are buying, or ask our team and we will confirm it.

Common questions

How do I convert cSt to SSU?

Use the box above. Above about 70 cSt, SSU is roughly cSt times 4.63. Below that the relationship is not a straight line, so the converter uses the ASTM D2161 equation. SSU values are measured at 100 °F (37.8 °C).

What does ISO VG 68 mean?

ISO VG 68 is an industrial oil with a viscosity of 68 cSt at 40 °C, within a band of 61.2 to 74.8 cSt. The number is the mid-point of the band.

Is cSt at 40 °C the same as SSU at 100 °F?

Not exactly. 100 °F is 37.8 °C, so the two are measured at slightly different temperatures. Everyday practice treats them as comparable, and this converter does the same. For lab work, use the test method on your data sheet.

Does this convert ISO VG to SAE?

No. SAE grades for engine and gear oils are measured at different temperatures and with different tests, so there is no exact conversion. Ask us if you are choosing between an industrial oil and an engine or gear oil.

Choosing an oil? Try the industrial oil finder, read ISO VG grades for industrial oils, or see our industrial oils.

Not sure which grade you need?

Tell us the machine and the oil you use now. We will recommend the grade.
