If you're importing lubricants — or almost any regulated product — into Nigeria, you'll encounter SONCAP: the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme. It's a mandatory pre-shipment certification, not an optional quality mark, and shipments without it can be delayed or rejected at the port.
What SONCAP actually verifies
SONCAP confirms that a product meets the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standard (or an accepted international equivalent) before it leaves the country of origin — the entire point is to catch non-compliant goods before they reach Nigerian ports, rather than after. For lubricants, this means verifying the product's specifications, labeling, and quality documentation against the applicable standard.
How the process works, at a high level
- Product registration — the product is registered with an accredited conformity assessment body recognized by Nigeria's Standards Organisation (SON).
- Testing and documentation review — the product's specifications are checked against the relevant standard, supported by real test data and technical documentation (this is where a proper TDS/MSDS, covered in our documentation guide, matters).
- Certificate of Conformity (CoC) — issued once the product passes, and required to accompany the shipment.
- SONCAP Certificate — issued at the Nigerian port of entry based on the CoC, completing the import clearance.
Why it exists
Nigeria's lubricant market is large — driven partly by limited local refining capacity, which pushes significant import volume — and SONCAP exists to protect that market from substandard or mislabeled product reaching consumers and fleet operators. It's a genuine quality gate, not just paperwork.
What this means if you're buying from us
We can meet SONCAP requirements on request — the registration, testing, and documentation process runs alongside your order rather than being something you have to arrange separately. If Nigeria (or another SONCAP-recognizing market) is your destination, mention it when you request a quote and we'll factor the certification timeline into your shipment plan from the start.
