It's tempting to think an electric vehicle simply needs less lubricant than a combustion engine — no engine oil, fewer moving parts. In reality, EVs need a different kind of fluid engineering entirely, and it's becoming one of the fastest-growing categories in the lubricants industry.
The fluid that matters most isn't a lubricant at all
Battery Thermal Management Fluids (TMFs) are the single largest segment of the EV fluids market — roughly 42% of it as of 2025. Their job has nothing to do with reducing friction: they keep a battery pack within its safe operating temperature window, which is directly tied to range, charging speed, safety, and how fast the battery degrades over its life. Get battery thermal management wrong, and no amount of good lubrication elsewhere fixes the problem.
E-axle and gearbox fluids aren't just "gear oil for EVs"
An EV's single- or two-speed reduction gearbox still needs lubrication, but the fluid has to do more than a conventional gear oil does. It has to be electrically non-conductive (dielectric) near motor windings, compatible with copper and other electrical components that many conventional EP additives actually attack, and often serve a cooling role alongside lubrication — all in one fluid.
The industry trend: fewer fluids doing more jobs
The clearest direction in EV fluid development right now is multi-functional fluids — a single formulation combining lubrication, cooling, and dielectric properties, replacing what used to be three separate systems. Fewer fluid types means fewer components, less weight, and simpler manufacturing — a real advantage for OEMs, and a real shift in what "a lubricant" even means for this vehicle category.
What this means for buyers today
Most fleets on the road are still combustion or hybrid, and will be for years — this isn't a call to switch a product line overnight. But EV fluid demand is a real, fast-growing category, not a niche experiment, and it's worth understanding now rather than catching up to it later.
