The sugar crushing season in India — typically from October to April — is a period of intense, continuous production. Sugar mills run 24 hours a day for 150–180 days, and during this period, there is no time for major maintenance on lubricated equipment. Everything must be in perfect condition at the start of the season, and lubrication must be maintained flawlessly throughout. A gearbox failure during peak crushing season can cost a sugar mill ₹50–200 lakh in lost production alone.
Cane Crusher Gearboxes: The Heart of the Mill
The main tandem mill gearboxes that drive the crushing rollers are subjected to enormous torque loads — some of the highest in any industrial application. Gear oils for these gearboxes must be ISO VG 460 or higher EP grade, often with additional anti-micropitting protection for the helical and bevel gear pairs. Synthetic gear oils are increasingly used in premium installations for their extended oil life and lower operating temperatures.
Open Gear Compounds for Mill Drive Gears
Large open gears on the primary crusher drives are typically lubricated with semi-fluid or bituminous open gear compounds. These are applied by spray or drip systems to the gear teeth. The compound must adhere to the gear surface under centrifugal force, provide extreme pressure protection at the point of tooth contact, and be resistant to washout from cane juice and cleaning water. Dibasic acid ester-based or bituminous formulations are commonly used.
Turbine Oil for Sugar Mill Power Generation
Most sugar mills operate their own bagasse-fired steam turbines for power generation and process steam. The turbine bearings run on circulating turbine oil — typically ISO VG 32 or 46 with excellent oxidation stability, rapid water separation, and low foaming tendency. Turbine oil condition monitoring (viscosity, acid number, water content) should be performed monthly during the crushing season.
Hydraulic Oils for Automatic Milling Controls
Modern sugar mills use hydraulic systems for mill roller pressure control, trash plate positioning, and various automated controls. ISO VG 46 or 68 AW hydraulic oil is standard. In tropical summer conditions and near steam-heated equipment, VG 68 is preferable for its superior film strength at higher temperatures.
Pre-Season Lubrication Checklist
Before the crushing season begins, all lubricated equipment should be inspected and serviced. Key actions: drain and replace gear oil in all major gearboxes, inspect oil samples for contamination or viscosity change, regrease all bearings and repack bearing housings where needed, inspect open gear spray systems and replace nozzles if blocked, check turbine oil condition and arrange fresh oil if required, and ensure adequate lubricant stock is on hand for the full season.
