Gear Oil for Motorcycles: What You Need to Know About API GL-4 and GL-5

Most motorcycle riders are vigilant about engine oil but surprisingly casual about gearbox oil. Yet the gearbox and final drive on a motorcycle take enormous abuse — particularly on Indian roads with their frequent gear changes, stop-start traffic, and occasional overloading. The wrong gear oil, or degraded gear oil, leads to difficult gear shifting, premature synchromesh wear, and in worst cases, gear tooth failure.

Do All Motorcycles Need Separate Gear Oil?

Most Indian 2-wheelers (100–160cc commuters like Hero Splendor, Honda Shine, TVS Star, Bajaj Platina) use a common wet clutch gearbox that shares oil with the engine crankcase. For these bikes, a 4T motorcycle engine oil with wet clutch compatibility is used for both engine and gearbox. Separate gear oil is not required. Larger motorcycles — Royal Enfield, KTM, BMW, higher-cc performance bikes — and most 3-wheelers and small 4-wheelers have separate gearboxes that require dedicated gear oil.

API GL-4: The Motorcycle Transmission Standard

For most separate motorcycle gearboxes and manual car transmissions, API GL-4 is the correct specification. GL-4 provides moderate extreme pressure protection suitable for the synchronised gear sets in most manual transmissions. The sulphur-phosphorus EP additives in GL-4 are at a level that does not attack the yellow metal components (brass synchromesh rings, bronze bushings) common in motorcycle and light vehicle gearboxes.

API GL-5: For Hypoid Gears and Heavy Loads

GL-5 contains significantly higher concentrations of EP additives — particularly sulphur compounds — to handle the extreme sliding contact in hypoid gear sets (where pinion and ring gear axes do not intersect). It is specified for rear axle differentials, transfer cases, and some heavy-duty transmissions. However, GL-5 should NOT be used in gearboxes specifying GL-4 — the high sulphur content can corrode and eat away brass and bronze synchromesh components.

Viscosity for Indian 3-Wheelers and Light Vehicles

For CNG-powered auto-rickshaws (Bajaj RE, Piaggio Ape), the gearbox and axle typically specify 80W-90 GL-4. The relatively heavy viscosity is appropriate for the low-speed, high-torque operating mode of these vehicles in city traffic. For some 4-wheeler manual gearboxes in Indian cars, 75W-80 or 75W-90 GL-4 synthetic is increasingly specified by OEMs for improved fuel economy.

How Often Should Motorcycle Gear Oil Be Changed?

For separate gearboxes, gear oil change interval is typically every 10,000–15,000 km or annually — whichever comes first. The oil should be changed while warm (after a short ride) to ensure better drain-out of contaminants and metal particles. If gear shifting becomes notchy or difficult before the interval is due, check the oil level and condition first — this is often the first symptom of degraded gear oil.
