A ship chandler is a supplier that provides vessels with all the provisions and technical supplies they need during a port call — from food and water to ropes, safety equipment, spare parts, and crucially, lubricants. In the maritime world, the ship chandler is the lifeline between shore and ship, and the quality and reliability of their service directly impacts a vessel’s ability to sail on schedule.
What Marine Lubricants Does a Vessel Need?
A commercial vessel’s lubricant requirements are extensive and varied. Main engine cylinder oil: For 2-stroke engines (most large cargo ships), cylinder oil is consumed continuously — injected directly into cylinders to lubricate piston rings. These are high-BN (Base Number) oils, typically SAE 50 viscosity. Crankcase/system oil: For both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, the crankcase oil lubricates bearings, connecting rods, and the main engine structure. Marine gear oil: For gearboxes connecting engine to propeller shaft, anchor winch gearboxes, and thrusters. Marine hydraulic oil: For steering gear, deck cranes, hatch covers, and mooring equipment. Marine greases: For stern tube, propeller shaft, anchor chain, and windlass bearings.
The Time Pressure of Port Lubricant Supply
A vessel at port has a narrow window. Port fees, pilotage costs, and charter agreements all create intense pressure to minimize time in port. Lubricant supply must happen efficiently and on time, even when the requirement comes in at short notice. A vessel that discovers a low gear oil level during its pre-departure check cannot wait 48 hours for a delivery — it needs supply within hours.
Lukeron’s Emergency Dispatch Capability
In April 2025, a vessel operating out of a Gujarat port contacted Lukeron Lubricants on a Saturday night. Marine gear oil was needed before a Sunday morning departure. Despite it being a weekend, Lukeron mobilized and executed the delivery, ensuring the vessel departed on schedule. This is not exceptional for Lukeron — it is standard operating procedure. Our commitment to 24/7 availability for marine clients is built into how we operate, not treated as a special exception.
Ports and Regions We Supply
Lukeron Lubricants serves vessel operators and ship chandlers at major ports in Gujarat and the broader Indian west coast: Jamnagar (Sikka), Kandla (Deendayal Port), Mundra, Pipavav, Navlakhi, and Okha are primary supply points. We also coordinate delivery to vessels at other ports through our logistics network. For export supply to vessels in international ports, we work with freight forwarders and international shipping agents.
Building a Marine Lubricant Supply Partnership
Ship operators and chandlers who establish standing supply agreements with Lukeron benefit from prioritized dispatch, consistent product quality, pre-arranged credit terms, and technical support for lubricant selection across different vessel types and engine specifications. We supply to fishing fleets, cargo vessels, tankers, and offshore support vessels with full documentation (COA, TDS, MSDS) as required by vessel operators.
